FRICTION FIRE WORKSHOP

Fire is one of the basic needs in life. A source for keeping warm, cooking, purifying water, giving oneself a sense of calm in the woods, and so much more. Sunday, August 22nd from 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M., wilderness survival expert Mike Bochnia will take participants on a journey that will explore fire-making from it’s most primitive start; from literally rubbing two sticks together, to learning how to make simple tools that make friction fire making easier. This will not only be a journey of fire-making, but a sharing of a philosophy of life-force and a view of nature as our ancestors might have experienced it.

Cost of the workshop is $25 per person. For Nature Center members the cost is $20. Pre-registration is required and class size is limited to 25 participants. This workshop is appropriate for older children as well as adults

Participants will need to bring a sharp sheath knife or locking blade knife with a blade at least 3 inches long. No pocket knives or bowie knives allowed. Each person should have their own knife (no sharing, please). You should also bring a sack lunch, plenty of water for the day and a camp chair or blanket or mat for sitting on the ground.

This workshop will take place on the Nature Center site at 425 S. Woodland Road. There will be plenty of shade under the tent, but do come prepared for taking short walks around the site to search for materials.

Mike Bochnia currently lives in Albuquerque, NM where he works for the Albuquerque Open Space Division. Bochnia has been practicing living a natural way of life for over a decade. In 2006 – 2007 he had the opportunity to be an instructor at a prominent East Coast wilderness survival and tracking school where he spent a year living primitively in a shelter he built without using modern tools, nails or screws. He lived off the land foraging, trapping, hunting and fishing with tools such as spears, bow and arrows and primitive throwing sticks that he made himself. He also made his own eating utensils, water purifying filters, buckskin clothing, moccasins and more. Bochnia has practiced these skills all over the United States and Asia and regularly holds workshops in the Albuquerque area.

You can register on-line at www.wmnature.org or at any Nature Center event.  If you have any questions regarding the workshop, please contact us at: wmnaturecenter@yahoo.com.
